Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

One of the most common questions we receive about quartz is, “Can I put a hot pot on my countertop?”

People generally ask this question because they’re either looking into purchasing new countertops or have likely just done so. Putting together your dream kitchen and watching it come to life is exciting and it’s a proud moment when it comes time to show it off to friends and family. Quality countertops are an investment and greatly add the value of a home. With all that in mind, here’s what we recommend.

Generally, quartz is very heat resistant, but it depends on how hot the object in question actually is. A tea kettle or a hot dish out of the microwave is typically not a threat, but a 450° pot from the oven could quite possibly cause some damage.

This is what Cambria says on their website about heat resistance.

Natural stone surfaces can be damaged by sudden and/or rapid change of temperature, especially near the edges as well as direct and/or sustained heating of the top. Cambria may not withstand the direct transfer of heat from pots and pans and other cooking units such as electric frying pans and griddles, and some crock-pots or roaster ovens and heat lamps. Therefore, the use of a hot pad or trivet is always recommended to prevent heating the product.

The bottom line is that no stone product is 100% heat proof and it’s better to be safe rather than sorry. We recommend the use of a heat trivet whenever possible.
