When Should Your Countertops Be Replaced?

Renovating a kitchen is no simple task.

The design decisions alone can seem endless. Not to mention determining what needs to be replaced or salvaged.

If you are trying to decide whether or not you should replace your countertops as part of your next kitchen renovation, here are some tips that might help you find your answer.

Common signs that it’s time to replace your old countertops:

  • Your countertops are scratched, dented, have scorch marks, or stains on them.
  • The countertops in your kitchen just don’t quite fit your personal style.
  • Your countertops are made of a material that doesn’t work for your lifestyle (such as a high-maintenance, delicate countertop when you have a house full of small children).
  • The layout of your kitchen needs better flow.
  • You have countertops with chips in it, mold, or that are rotting due to water damage.

Keep in mind that you might not necessarily need to get brand-new countertops – it may just be a matter of focusing more on maintaining your current countertops.

If your countertops fit with your personal style and aren’t damaged, but have a slightly “worn” look about them, they probably need more attention to maintenance.

Different countertops will require different kinds of maintenance.

  • Granite should be sealed yearly with a granite sealer.
  • Wood, on the other hand, doesn’t need to be sealed, but it will hold up better if the wood is refinished with tung oil every 3 – 6 months.
  • Quartz and solid surface countertops do not require sealing or polishing  — both of these surfaces are very low maintenance and durable.

Are you choosing to get new countertops? There are lots of options available.
