Why Is There a Gap Between My Countertop and Wall?

countertop installation gaps

If you’ve recently had new countertops installed, you might notice something unexpected: a small gap between the countertop and the back wall.

At first glance, this can feel like something went wrong, but in most cases, it’s completely normal.

Why Gaps Happen

The main reason for this gap is simple: most walls aren’t perfectly straight. Even in newer homes, walls can be:

  • Slightly wavy
  • Uneven
  • Not perfectly flat

When a straight countertop is installed against an uneven wall, small gaps can appear where the wall dips or curves away. This isn’t a fabrication issue, it’s a result of the home itself.

Is This Something to Worry About?

No, this is very common and nothing to be concerned about. In fact, countertop installers expect some level of unevenness in walls. The key is how that gap is handled during the backsplash phase.

Do You Need to Fix the Gap Before Adding a Backsplash?

That depends on the type of backsplash you’re planning on.

Tile

In most cases, no prep is needed. Tile installers use mortar, which allows them to:

  • “Float” the wall.
  • Adjust for uneven areas.
  • Create a flat, finished surface.

Full-Height Splash

Again, no prep is usually needed. A full-height backsplash will:

  • Cover the gap entirely.
  • Create a clean, continuous look.

Because it’s a larger piece, it visually eliminates any inconsistencies behind it.

4” or 6” Backsplash

This is where it matters most. With shorter backsplashes:

  • The gap may need to be filled with caulk.
  • Larger gaps can result in thick or uneven caulk lines.
  • This can affect the final appearance.

How to Prevent an Unattractive Finish

If you’re planning a shorter backsplash and your wall is noticeably uneven, it’s a good idea to prep the wall beforehand. A simple solution is to:

  • Apply a skim coat of joint compound.
  • Smooth out the wall surface and create a flatter area for installation.

This small step can make a big difference in achieving a clean, polished look.
