Get to know more about Laminate Countertop

It has been around for a long time.

The big advantages to laminate are that there are literally hundreds of designs to choose from, with more getting released every year and with advances in technologies.

Laminates are more true-to-life, more durable, and more scratch-resistant than ever before. Also, the moisture fears with laminate are a bit overstated.

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about laminate surfaces to give you a (re) education on the benefits and drawbacks of this tried and true surface.

How POST FORM Laminates are Made

How FLAT LAY Laminates are Made

1. What exactly is laminate?

Laminate is a handy material made from layers of paper that are tightly pressed together to form a thin, rigid sheet that is fairly easy to work with.

This sheet is then glued to a wood substrate typically for countertops. It is a low-maintenance, inexpensive choice for a kitchen countertop.

2. What should I do if my laminate countertop gets damaged?

Keep in mind that even though laminate countertops are stain-resistant and scratch-resistant, they cannot be repaired if they get chips, cracks, burns, water damage, or impact damage, so you may wish to replace them if any of these incidences occur.

Maintain your countertop by cleaning it regularly, just like any other countertop.

3. Can I have an under-mount sink in Laminate Countertops?

Yes! With the use of an attached solid surface ring, select sinks can be under-mounted to laminate countertops with an accent.

4. Will I have seams in my Laminate Countertops?

Depending on the size and shape of your countertops a seam may be inevitable.

Corner seams in post-form countertops are most common, as it is easier to hide and in most cases is far from the sink and other plumbed fixtures.

If you have a corner sink, the flat-lay laminate is the best option to keep seams far from water run-off.

5. Are there different types of laminate countertops to choose from?

We have two collections of laminate countertops at FLOFORM: the Post-Form Collection that can actually be heated and bent to create backsplashes and wrapped front profiles, and the Custom Collection — also known as Flat Lay, allowing for all kinds of custom shapes and sizes (only with attached backsplashes, however).

Maintenance is Easy

Today’s laminate surfaces are more stain-resistant than ever. Regular cleaning requires only a quick wipe with a damp cloth or sponge.

More stubborn stains can be treated using mild household detergent and a soft-bristled brush. No industrial strength cleaners needed here. Stay away from steel wool or other coarse pads and don’t use any acidic or abrasive cleaners.

Stay vigilant about not letting spills sit and your countertop will stay beautiful for years.

They’re Durable

There’s a misconception that laminate is not a durable material. In truth, laminate is quite durable, as long as you take a couple of precautions.

Your laminate countertop is not a cutting board, so don’t slice into it. Laminate can also be a bit fussy around excess heat, so don’t put a hot pot right on your laminate countertop. Aside from heat and slicing, these countertops are pretty resistant to most things!

Today’s laminate countertops are made in a wide variety of different colors and patterns and as a result, you can get countertops that look like wood, quartz, granite, or pretty much anything else you could imagine!

These countertops can also feature some very stylish edge profiles that add depth to your kitchen’s overall aesthetic.
